Jointly
organized by IICT and C-DAC
OCTOBER 23, 2002 - FEBRUARY 05, 2003
Experienced bioinformaticians are limited in number, while
the need for them in industry, academia and government projects
has grown rapidly. The Advanced Diploma in Bioinformatics
(ADB), organized by Indian Institute of Chemical Technology
(IICT), Hyderabad and C-DAC offered excellent faculty, hands on experience to Super
Computing Facility, placement assistance, guest lectures
by eminent scientists from India and abroad amongst other
features. The main objective of this course was to provide
an insight into the value of rapid access to scientific
information for education and research purposes.
The
Advanced Diploma in Bioinformatics was a 3 months fulltime
course consisting of thirteen modules and an industry relevant
project. Continuous evaluation was a part of the course
structure wherein the student's day-to-day work was evaluated
based on the performance through assignments and tests.
Daily session comprised 3 hours of classroom lecture followed
by 4 hours of lab work. Course content included: Fundamentals
of Biology & Biological Databases, Applications
of Pharmako & Enzyme Kinetics, Molecular
modeling, Proteomics &
Genomics, Data mining techniques
in Bioinformatics, Bio Statistics,
Numerical Methods and Optimization techniques, OS
Fundamentals & Unix, Programming
Concepts in C, Object Oriented
Programming Concepts & C++, Relational
Database Management System, Web
Technologies (HTML, XML, Perl), Parallel
Computing Techniques, and Data
Mining Techniques. The reference book for this course was
"Computer Fundamentals" by Dr. P.K.Sinha.
The course was attended
by graduates in Computer Engineering/Chemical Engineering,
and Post graduation in Computers/Biology/Environmental Science/Biotechnology/Chemistry/Agricultural
Science, with a good knowledge base in Bioinformatics, which
requires exposure to concepts on Biology, Computer fundamentals
and Programming Concepts.
Special
features of the course were:
- Access to state of the art computing
facilities
- Access to Super Computer PARAM
10000
- Unique curriculum
- Resourceful faculty
- Extensive hands on sessions
- Well-equipped library
- Creative work environment
- Guest Lectures from R&D organizations
of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics
- One week visit to C-DAC, Pune
to get hands on experience on High Performance Computers
in the areas of genomics and sequence analysis.
Students
were given certificates on successful completion of the
course.
